Yellow Peas, also known as field peas (Pisum sativum), are a leguminous crop cultivated for their nutrient density and versatility in animal and equine diets. After harvesting, the peas are dried and often split, ground, or processed into meal or protein concentrates. They are rich in plant-based protein, dietary fiber, and complex carbohydrates, particularly starch, which typically comprises 40–50% of their dry matter. Yellow peas also provide essential amino acids—especially lysine—and micronutrients such as folate, potassium, and phosphorus.
In equine nutrition, Yellow Peas are used as a supplemental protein and energy source, primarily in processed feed formulations. The relatively high starch content can provide a concentrated energy supply, although this starch may be resistant to digestion.
